Minimizing expensive system downtime |
Migration issues
Traditionally, the hardware, operating system and database platform for
an SAP implementation is decided based on initial capacity sizing, cost
and skill sets required to support. During the SAP application life
cycle, changes in following criteria leads to hardware, OS and/or
database platform changes
Growth in SAP transaction volume, users and
database leads to the threshold of the current hardware, operating
system, and database platform.
Technology change in hardware/ OS/ database
platform leads to a choice of better performance and reduction in cost.
Merger/Acquisition
of businesses having SAP environments in different OS/database platform
requires consolidation and migration to a single platform.
The challenge current
customers face is determining how a company can migrate their SAP
environment to a new platform, while at the same time, ensuring its
functionality and processes continue to operate without significant
interruption.
Geus’ Migration services
The contribution of a SAP certified migration consultant with previous
migration experience becomes an important factor for a seamless
execution of an OS/DB migration project. Geus Technology has the
experience, leadership, and resources to provide you with a timely,
cost-effective, and successful OS/DB migration. We have supplemented
the SAP migration process with our unique technical accelerators to
enhance success. Our accelerators provide you with a structured
approach to migrate the landscape, handle change management transports,
and provide a successful, proven, detailed and complete project plan.
During our migration
process, we assist you with:

approach at a glance
Preparation
During our
pre-planning session, we will determine and alleviate
compatibility issues between your Operating System, database, and SAP
to make sure that they will function correctly together. Many
installations have external systems that will need to be evaluated as
well. The bolt-on systems will be reviewed and recommendations given
for any changes that may need to occur with them. During this time we
will undertake the following activities:
 |
Evaluate the current SAP environment |
 |
Target system OS requirement |
 |
Evaluate Software requirements |
 |
Develop an initial migration workplan |
 |
Obtain Management Approval |
 |
Coordinate with SAP support |
The
Preparation phase in the
migration process is to take detail action on all aspects of migration
planning. We can provide you with resource planning, budgeting, project
planning and a time frame to ensure successful completion. We check
that all of the necessary technical prerequisites are ready such as:
Hardware, Operating system, Database and SAP software. We assist you to
co-ordinate with SAP support and contract team to receive software and
support for the migration project.
Test run &
Non-Production Systems Migration
The Execution
phase starts with migration of the “proof of
concept” test system. Many times there are other non-SAP
components requiring migration as well. These will need to be carefully
researched and planned for during the migration. Some of the non-SAP
components that we have expertise in are Interfaces, Job Scheduling,
EDI, Tax software (Vertax/Taxware/BSI), Output Management, Faxing and
Monitoring/Capacity tools
Our
migration process
involves performing a test migration of the production environment to
the target platform and applying all fixes required to prepare for
migration of the other systems in the landscape. It is during this
phase of the project that the key business processes and interfaces are
tested to ensure operability and that the functionality works
correctly. If there are fixes required due to OS/database platform
changes, they are implemented and tested during this phase of the
project.
After
the “proof of
concept” test system is migrated and the technical functionality
of the system has been proven, all systems in the landscape will be
migrated. Throughout the process of migrating additional systems the
processes are refined to streamline and ensure success during the
cutover of the production system. Before we proceed to the Go-Live
phase, we make sure we receive full management approval.
Final Migration &
Go-Live
The Go-Live
phase consists of the final migration of the production
system to the new platform. In this phase we perform the migration of
the production database and all dynamic data of SAP Production,
interfaces and add-on systems. All changes and fixes are applied based
on previous migration cycles. The functional team checks the system to
ensure it is operating correctly. Once agreement that the system is
operational the users are then allowed to sign on and begin use of the
new system. Our team also assists with post-go live tuning. After going
live with target production system, we schedule post go-live migration
check with SAP support and assist with implementing recommendations
from SAP support.
